Russian Gifts: Notelets

Imperial Russian Ballet (available soon)

These new costume design notelets present the work of three of the most talented artists working with the Imperial Russian Theatres: Adolphe Charlemagne drew the costumes for many of the ballets staged by Marius Petipa, and we show here one of his very earliest designs, for The Beauty of Lebanon, and for The Daughter of the Snows, when he was at the height of his career. Ivan Vsevelozhsky is remembered most for his work with Tchaikovsky and Petipa on The Sleeping Beauty; and we show here his designs for Petipa’s very last (unperformed) ballet, The Romance of the Rosebud. Leon Bakst is famous for his work with the Ballets Russes, but here we show a design for his first ballet commission, from the Imperial Russian Theatres, for Fairy Doll.
